Programs & Services - Design

The goal of the Design Committee is to create an inviting streetscape that emphasizes a sense of place and highlights the unique assets and historic character of Downtown Mount Joy.

Main Street Facade Improvement Grant

The façade enhancement grant is intended to stimulate private investment in the preservation of historic downtown architecture and to foster image-making improvements to downtown properties. Funding for the Main Street Mount Joy Matching Grant Program is provided from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development through the Pennsylvania Main Street Program and the Lancaster County Planning Commission through the Urban Enhancement Program. Grant approval is evaluated by deciding to what extent the proposed scope of work enlivens the public space, especially at the pedestrian level, by creating a new look, a brighter appearance, or an obvious upgrade to a blighted condition.

Main Street Flower Planter Program

Enjoy seeing the floral bloom in the 24 planters that have been placed along Main Street?!  We do! Our goal is to eventually have 45 planters lining Main Street in the Downtown. This program is award winning too!  In 2007, Main Street Mount Joy was honored with the statewide Townie Award. These planters stand for much more.  The flower planters represent creativity & innovation, strong community partnerships, hard work & dedication, and are an outward example of our community’s inward beauty.  Each side of the planter can hold a sponsor.  Area businesses and residents can sponsor a side, multiple sides, or a whole planter.  As a sponsor, sponsors receive a Wilton Armetale plaque that has a specialized, engraved message.  Sponsors can recognize themselves, their business, remember a loved one, or honor someone special to the sponsor.

Holiday Decorations

Mount Joy glows during the holiday season thanks to Main Street Mount Joy volunteers and local utilities companies, including Hertzler Electric, CenturyLink, and Comcast.  Joy banners and lit stars line Main Street for approximately two miles attached to PPL utility poles.  The frames of the stars were created by the Mount Joy Career & Technology Center and Main Street volunteers prepare each star by wrapping the stars with garland and a string of white lights.

Main Street Facade Wash Program

This program is in the planning phase. The concept is to coordinate washing of Main Street facades in the downtown area.  Main Street Mount Joy would like to partner with the Mount Joy Borough Authority to launch this program after the milling, grinding, and repaving of Main Street is completed. Repaving of Main Street is currently schedule for the end of August 2010.  By coordinating the washing, we hope to reduce costs to each participating property owners.  To participate, property owners will need to sign waivers.

New! Golden Broom Awards

Property owners and tenants in the downtown are continuously doing wonderful things that make the corridor more inviting and attractive.  From keeping downtown planters and window boxes watered and blooming, to sweeping sidewalks, to facade improvements, all efforts add positively to the downtown.  Extending from our annual Excellence in Property Improvements Awards, the Golden Broom Awards would also recognize the great efforts of people in the downtown.  Neighbors can nominate neighbors.  Those nominations will be reviewed continuously by the Design Committee and those awarded will receive a framed certificate of appreciation along with a "golden broom" to be displayed proudly.
